Start with the words, questions, and steps you are trying to make sense of. Keep track of what you know and what you still need to ask.
Start with the question in front of you
You do not have to understand the whole system today. Begin with the event or message that brought you here. Write down what you were told, who told you, and when. Put unfamiliar words in a separate list instead of filling the gaps with a guess.
Separate a plan from a promise
A date someone hopes for and a date confirmed by the responsible office are different pieces of information. Keep both clearly labeled. When you ask for an update, focus on what has changed and what, if anything, you need to do. You can ask for an explanation in ordinary language.
Questions to carry with you
- What is the next confirmed step?
- Who can answer this particular question?
- Is there something our family needs to prepare, and by when?
One manageable next step
Choose the most pressing question and identify one person or office to ask. Keep the answer and any unanswered parts together.
