Be specific about the transportation, mentorship, or community support you can offer.
Name what you can offer
A useful offer specifies the help, its limits, and how someone can ask for it. This might be a ride to a known destination, a mentoring conversation, or an introduction agreed to by the people involved. Avoid promises that depend on unconfirmed arrangements.
Agree on the details
Ask what support the person wants and what information is necessary to arrange it. Clarify timing, contact preferences, and what to do if plans change. If the need is outside your role, explain that and identify a possible next contact without guaranteeing an outcome.
Questions to carry with you
- What have I actually committed to?
- What has the person agreed to share?
- What is the backup if I become unavailable?
One manageable next step
Make one offer specific enough that both people understand its scope, next step, and limits.
