Understand what comes next

Start with the words, questions, and steps you are trying to make sense of. Keep track of what you know and what you still need to ask.

Work from what you have been told

Start with the notice, conversation, or upcoming event you are trying to understand. Keep track of the words used and the date. If you do not have access to a document, write down what you remember and mark it as your recollection.

Ask a focused question

A request about one clear issue is easier to follow than several concerns mixed together. Ask the responsible staff member or your legal representative to explain the next step that applies to you. Keep unanswered questions separate from confirmed instructions.

Questions to carry with you

  • What action is being asked of me?
  • Who is responsible for explaining this step?
  • What date or instruction needs confirmation?

One manageable next step

Choose one question, write it clearly, and keep a record of whom you asked and the response you received.
