Understand the process

Find a starting point for questions about the justice system and the words you may encounter.

Give unfamiliar words a place

When information arrives quickly, keep a list of terms, names, and dates you want explained. You do not have to interpret every document alone. Mark what you know firsthand and what you have been told by someone else.

Ask about your situation

A general explanation may not answer what happens in your particular case. Ask the relevant contact to explain the stage, the next scheduled event, and whom to approach for specific questions. Keep any promised follow-up with your notes.

Questions to carry with you

  • What does this term mean here?
  • Is any action expected from me?
  • Who should I contact if I do not receive an update?

One manageable next step

Prepare two or three questions for your next conversation. Ask for unclear answers to be explained again.
