Break a large task into the next small step

I already know this — skip it

What is it?

A next-step plan describes one action you can actually begin.

Why would I need this?

Practice turning a broad goal into a manageable activity.

Show me.

  1. Write the broad task, such as organize paperwork.
  2. Name the first visible action, such as find the folder.
  3. Choose the next action and any help needed.
  4. Stop at a reasonable point and record where to resume.

Try it.

Turn “Get ready for tomorrow” into three small actions using only an invented example.

Watch out for this.

A smaller step does not remove a deadline. Ask for help promptly if the available time will not be enough.

Explain this another way

Focus on one small task: break a large task into the next small step. You can practice aloud, on paper, or with someone you trust.

You did it.

You have practiced a useful next step. Repeat it if you want, or continue at your own pace.
