Lesson 2 of 10 · about 5 minutes

Create and use an email account

I already know this — skip it

What is it?

Email lets you send written messages to an address such as alex@example.invalid.

Why would I need this?

Employers and services may use email to contact you.

Show me.

  1. Choose an email provider by going to its known official website or app.
  2. Look for Create account. Read the information it asks for before entering anything.
  3. Choose an address you are comfortable using. Use your own unique password and secure recovery options.
  4. Open the inbox. Use Compose or New message to write, then review the recipient before Send.

Try it.

Identify the recipient, subject, and message in the fictional example below. Do not create a real account in this practice.

Watch out for this.

This lesson does not create an email account. Never put a real password into a HAB practice exercise.

Explain this another way

An email address works like a mailing address for electronic messages. The inbox is where incoming messages arrive.

Show me an example

To: alex@example.invalid. Subject: Appointment question. Message: Could you confirm the time of our meeting?

What does that word mean?

Username: The name that identifies an account when you sign in. It may be an email address.

Password: A secret used to sign in. Never put your real password into a HAB practice exercise.

When a feature needs information, we ask only for the minimum needed to make that feature work. Our approach is to collect and retain only what the feature needs—not to build a detailed profile of you or your child. Hosting and security services may retain technical logs, such as IP addresses.
