Separate hopes from promises

I already know this — skip it

What is it?

This reflection separates what you hope the reunion will feel like from what anyone has actually promised.

Why would I need this?

Give yourself room to discuss expectations without making either person responsible for a perfect homecoming.

Show me.

  1. Name one hope you have about the return.
  2. Ask what the other person hopes for, without supplying their answer.
  3. Separate hopes from concrete commitments such as a visit or shared meal.
  4. Choose one small plan both people want and leave room to adjust.

Try it.

Use the invented hope “We will spend every evening together.” Turn it into a question about one evening this week.

Watch out for this.

You do not have to feel only happiness or only worry. The exercise asks you to name your experience, not diagnose it.

Explain this another way

Focus on one small task: separate hopes from promises. You can practice aloud, on paper, or with someone you trust.

HAB practice example: Jordan asks: “Would you like a quiet dinner Wednesday, or would another time work better?”

You did it.

You have practiced a useful next step. Repeat it if you want, or continue at your own pace.
