Understand a bank account and debit card

I already know this — skip it

What is it?

A checking account holds money used for everyday transactions. A debit card generally uses money from that account.

Why would I need this?

You may use an account for bills or receiving pay.

Show me.

  1. Compare account terms and ask about fees and minimums.
  2. Ask the bank or credit union what identification it accepts.
  3. Learn how to check the balance and recent transactions.
  4. Ask how to report a lost card or an unrecognized transaction.

Try it.

Read the fictional pay statement in this lesson. Do not enter any account numbers.

Watch out for this.

Account terms vary. A card payment may not appear immediately in the available balance. Ask the bank about its rules.

Explain this another way

A debit card accesses account funds. It is different from borrowing through a credit card.

Show me an example

If Alex has 100 available and spends 20, Alex needs to keep track of that purchase while it is processing.

What does that word mean?

Debit card: A card generally used to spend funds from a linked account.

Direct deposit: An electronic payment sent directly to an account, such as wages.

Routing number: A number used to identify a financial institution for certain transactions. Do not enter banking details here.
