What is it?
A planned pause gives you words for stopping a difficult conversation and proposing a later check-in.
Why would I need this?
Practice a pause that does not promise agreement or force an immediate resolution.
Show me.
- Notice when you are no longer listening well.
- State that you need a pause without insulting or threatening.
- If it is safe and appropriate, propose when to check back.
- At the return time, ask whether both people are ready to continue.
Try it.
Say an example pause request aloud. Include a realistic time to check back.
Watch out for this.
If you feel unsafe, focus on getting appropriate help. This exercise is not a plan for managing threats or abuse.
Explain this another way
Focus on one small task: ask for a pause and a return time. You can practice aloud, on paper, or with someone you trust.
